Our first adventure takes place Saturday Aug 10 2024 at John Pennekamp State Park. This is a single day trip with no overnight. Pennekamp has a beautiful network of canals and tunnels through the mangroves on the Atlantic side of Key Largo that is ideal for an adventure. We will be exploring the area while working on Canoeing Merit Badge and learning navigation/orienteering skills using maps. We will be meeting in Coconut Grove to drive down together to Key Largo. Canoes have been reserved from a local outfitter and will be delivered to the trailhead complete with paddles, and life vests. The rental price per boat is $75 for the day. Two people can paddle and one passenger per boat. If you have snorkeling gear please bring it or you can rent some at the park as we will be stopping to snorkel as the water is clear and no powerboats are permitted in the canals we will be exploring. We will be working on some BSA Snorkeling Award skills. I suggest scouts watch this video to become familiar with the skills involved in canoeing.
